The Duncan Decider
On Monday night the Cadder Duncan League reached a fitting climax with a “winner takes all” final game between Dunwoody and Little. For the first time in the season skips were heard talking tactics before the game. This surprised team members not only because it was a first, but also clearly the skips had expectation of performance levels that far exceeded the levels of skill displayed earlier in the season. However, the skips faith was justified with a high level of shot conversion throughout the match from both teams. A steal of two in the opening end gave Dunwoody a start that not even he could have imagined and his smile, lighting up the ice, was off putting for the opposition. The next two ends were won with a 1 from Little bringing everything back to level. In the 4th end, Dunwoody was lying one and was about to pull his last stone until team lead Donaldson harangued him with the words “these are types of shot skips are expected to play if they want to win games.” Dunwoody changed the call (the first time he’s listened to Donaldson all season) drew round the guards coming to a rest in the 4 foot for a two! A further steal in the 5th put Dunwoody in control. With his team expecting to be asked to clear everything Dunwoody continued to call the aggressive game of drawing the button in the 6th and 7th where the teams shared single shots. It was a fitting finish to a highly competitive Duncan season. Congratulations are due to Dunwoody, Paton, Kelly and Donaldson for winning the league and to Little, Burrows, McAuley and Elder for taking it down to the wire. After the game Dunwoody was heard to say that he had not expected to win the league at the beginning of the season. His team agreed unanimously that they did not think he had it in him either. The whole club will look forward to benefiting from his presentation of a bottle of whiskey at prizegiving. Although increasingly competitive the Duncan is a great place to introduce new curlers to the fun and fellowship of curling. If you have friends who would like to give it a go, then put them in touch with club secretary David Graham soon. It won’t be long till next season. Alan Donaldson
