150 Years of History
Cadder Curling was 150 years Young in 2012!
Saturday February 25th 2012 marked the 150th anniversary of Cadder Curling Club. This date had been long awaited by many of the club members and a great deal of time had been spent by the committee in organizing the day’s activities.
The day kicked off with a hearty lunch of soup and sandwiches, before commencing the sport for the day – a Bonspiel playing on all 8 rinks at Braehead. A number of local clubs, some of whom have long established links with Cadder, were invited to compete. Clubs participating included Alma, Nondes, Cambusnethan, New Monkland, Glasgow XX, Old Glenalmond, Cawder House and a Presidents’ rink which included our Guest of Honour, the President of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club, Dr Patrick Edington and the current President of Tenth Province, our very own Chris Ormerod.
The Ice was, as always at Braehead, excellent and the competition keen. The seven visiting teams and the Presidents’ team played against the eight Cadder rinks with all shots being added to make a final tally. After three ends and the stacking of brooms the game could not have been more delicately poised with Cadder up on 4 rinks and down on 4. However the Cadder boys, seemingly more refreshed by the half time dram, pulled away in the second half to an eventual winning score of Cadder 60 Rest of the World 33. (Only two of the Rest of the World team won – Glasgow XX and the Presidents’ rink which contained three Cadder members in Messrs Rutherford, Speirs and Ormerod.)
A great photographic record of the Bonspiel was taken by Stephen McLay who has been sidelined by injury all season.
Many of our visitors joined us for an evening dinner at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Glasgow where we were served an exceptional meal and treated to some very entertaining after dinner speeches.
Our menu and program for the evening was illustrated with some of the comic curling sketches by the late Rod McLeod, a Cadder member for many years and the tables were decorated in a curling theme by Derrick Milligan. Tony Yates our long distance member from south of the border opened the evening with the Curler’s Grace in an interesting Wiltshire Scots accent!
Glasgow XX club presented Cadder with gavel and soundblock, perhaps they have heard tell of Cadder’s legendary AGMs !
Don Rutherford, our current President, made a toast to the Queen and introduced the various speakers for the evening. Don also presented the club with a new trophy to mark the 150th anniversary and to be competed for in future by teams selected by the President and Vice-President. The trophy is a solid brass curling stone cast by Cadder member Andrew Young of Archibald Young, the only remaining foundry in Kirkintilloch. It is so heavy that it is rumoured that anyone who could lift it would win it!
Alasdair Speirs told the history of Cadder Curling from its early days to the more recent indoor curling. (Most of it from personal memory? – Ed) The President in his reply to Alasdair attempted a hitherto unheard riddle including all 46 current members names which left us all somewhat confused! The toast to the Royal Caledonian Curling Club was given by Gary Macfarlane who encouraged the provision of curling for a new generation of young Curlers. Our guest of honour, RCCC President Patrick Edington gave a reply on behalf of the RCCC. David McAdam gave the toast to the guests which was replied to in rhyme by Chris Ormerod, Tenth Province President and Cadder Secretary! Our evening was rounded off by a vote of thanks given by the Vice- President Derrick Milligan.
A Great Day was had by all!!!!
