Our 2024 AGM was, as ever, a fun-filled social event as well as an admin necessity. Team Dagen was presented with the Invershiel Trophy (Pic1: (L to R) Howard Purdie, Euan Dagen (skip), Ian Horn, pictured with Mark McAuley (president) (Alan Dunwoody - absent). Team Purdie was presented with the Duncan Trophy. Pic2: (L to R) Ian Gillespie, Euan Dagen, Howard Purdie (Skip), Ian Horn with President Mark McAuley (Alan Dunwoody - absent). Team Ferguson was presented with The Duck - a friendly, humorous jibe at the team with the lowest score in the Invershiel League. Messrs Jackson, Moore and Barr were not present for the photograph! During the year Cadder lost the friendly match with Alma CC and received the Wooden Spoon as shown below. One of the two teams playing won their match but it was not enough to retain the winning streak. We can also report two successful friendly matches with: (1) Glasgow XX CC where we retained the Rutherford Quaich and (2) Inverkeithing CC where we gained the trophy as shown below.
A big thanks goes to everyone involved in the evening, including those organising food and drink (and to Mark for a poetic summary of the main event).

Saturday 20 January saw the annual match with Inverkeithing CC played at Kinross Ice Rink. Players Gillespie (skip), McAuley, Ferguson and Munn won a titanic struggle 7-5 to reverse the losing streak of 3. The score in the annual challenge now sits at Cadder 5 wins to Inverkeithing 4.
The Cadder team skipped by Robert Jamieson and including Robert Storey, John Fergusson and Alan Munn had a resounding victory to win the Denis Kyd Quaich at Greenacres at the weekend . They won all of their four games which started with a tight 5-3 win against Dumbarton in the morning followed by a decisive 12-2 result in their second match against Helensburgh who had just previously beat a strong Kelvinside team. The team then went on to take a 5-2 victory over a Cawder House rink skipped by Alan Hannah, to then finally beat Cardross 5-2, another previous holder of the cup. The final tally was plus 18 shots well ahead of the rest of the pack. Well done team.
This coming Friday is our annual P v VP curling match and curry.
We start at 5.45pm at Hamilton Ice Rink, with a keenly fought game, and then retire to the Bombay Cottage for lots of chat and great food Hope to see you there - https://www.indianrestauranthamilton.co.uk I'm pleased to report that Cadder won the Strathkelvin Cup at Hamilton yesterday afternoon. We were the only club to win both our matches, so that made the task of counting the scores a bit simpler for the organisers (Nondes).
Cadder A (Gary Macfarlane, David Graham, George Paton and John Blair) had a comfortable 10-1 win over Cawder House, while Cadder B (Robert Jamieson, Alan Dunwoody, Allan Munn and me) were able to beat Nondes A 7-4. In the Nondes game we got a terrific boost from a '5' in the second end which put us in front, but after 6 ends the gap had narrowed and had there been time for another the result might well have been different. The attached photo shows the teams and our trophy - useful for identification purposes if it gets lost in the next 12 months - and as this year's winners we are to organise the 2022 event. Thanks to all who played, especially those who stepped in to sub at fairly short notice. Malcolm Kelly President versus Vice President match followed by meal at the Shish Mahal.
“The evening did not get off to a good start for the President who arrived on ice 15 minutes late. Much to the amusement of the Vice President. How he managed to get there in time, I don’t know. The lure of the curry afterwards, perhaps. The main match between President and Vice President was a close tussle with the President scraping a 1 up lead at the end. The sub-teams fared somewhat differently and suffice it to say that the Vice President won overall. It was not the close tussle that the President would have liked! There was some concern expressed when the President was informed that the scorecards had been tampered with. Someone blamed the President’s sub-team of interfering, the President played down any suggestions that the Russians were involved and attempted to blame anyone but himself! The president decided that it was useless to try to claim the trophy for himself and duly presented the trophy (a wine bucket and empty bottle of wine, kindly supplied by Shish Mahal management) to William Elder, our future President. William was last seen re-entering the restaurant to celebrate with a glass of water – nominated driver and all that! Well done – William, and the rest of your team.” 2 teams represented Cadder at the Dunbartonshire Province opening Bonspiel on Wednesday 26th September 2018.
The first team of Alan Roe, Alasdair Schreiber, David Moore, and Ross Maxwell won the first game by +6 shots v Helensburgh Our second team of Gary Macfarlane, William Elder, John Blair and Mike Burrows then played Bearsden Ski Club, the squad played really well, and with a hit and lie for 3 at the last end they won 13 - 2, to give a total one shot win over Nondes Curling Club in 2nd and the rest of the Province Well done Cadder - a great start to the season The Round Robin stages of the 2018 RCCC Rink Championship Finals at Forfar are now over.
Cadder are representing Braehead and have qualified for the Quarter Finals, finishing second in Division D with 2 wins, one draw and one loss - great results guys! The team is Alan Donaldson, Ian Gillespie, Euan Dagen and Mark McAuley, and Colin Weir has also been playing. This is their first major Scottish finals for most of the team, and they have done brilliant so far. They are a great team. Alan as we all know is very competitive, Ian has got to the Rink Championship semifinal stages before, and Euan and Mark are part of this years Invershiel Championship winning team. Do well tomorrow Guys. This season has been very competitive with teams Craigie, Donaldson, and Dagen all in the mix in the last few weeks.
With just 2 games to go there were just 2 points between Andrew Craigie's team of Alan Morris, Colin Weir, and John Barr, and Euan Dagen's team of Gary Macfarlane, Mark McAuley and David Barr. Andrew unfortunately could not make the penultimate game and they lost. Team Dagen beat Robert Storey which left them 4 points ahead and Invershiel Champions for 2018 Well done guys The Duncan Decider
On Monday night the Cadder Duncan League reached a fitting climax with a “winner takes all” final game between Dunwoody and Little. For the first time in the season skips were heard talking tactics before the game. This surprised team members not only because it was a first, but also clearly the skips had expectation of performance levels that far exceeded the levels of skill displayed earlier in the season. However, the skips faith was justified with a high level of shot conversion throughout the match from both teams. A steal of two in the opening end gave Dunwoody a start that not even he could have imagined and his smile, lighting up the ice, was off putting for the opposition. The next two ends were won with a 1 from Little bringing everything back to level. In the 4th end, Dunwoody was lying one and was about to pull his last stone until team lead Donaldson harangued him with the words “these are types of shot skips are expected to play if they want to win games.” Dunwoody changed the call (the first time he’s listened to Donaldson all season) drew round the guards coming to a rest in the 4 foot for a two! A further steal in the 5th put Dunwoody in control. With his team expecting to be asked to clear everything Dunwoody continued to call the aggressive game of drawing the button in the 6th and 7th where the teams shared single shots. It was a fitting finish to a highly competitive Duncan season. Congratulations are due to Dunwoody, Paton, Kelly and Donaldson for winning the league and to Little, Burrows, McAuley and Elder for taking it down to the wire. After the game Dunwoody was heard to say that he had not expected to win the league at the beginning of the season. His team agreed unanimously that they did not think he had it in him either. The whole club will look forward to benefiting from his presentation of a bottle of whiskey at prizegiving. Although increasingly competitive the Duncan is a great place to introduce new curlers to the fun and fellowship of curling. If you have friends who would like to give it a go, then put them in touch with club secretary David Graham soon. It won’t be long till next season. Alan Donaldson The David Duncan final was contested on Valentine’s day with a few wives pointing out that this had not been the reason for keeping the evening clear in our diaries. The original team put together at the beginning of the season were all available to play, McAuley, Jamieson, Daegan and Donaldson. Having been beaten by Kelvinside earlier in the season the team entered the match as underdogs but were looking forward to the occassion. In the first end both sides played every stone asked of them by their skips. However, Kelvinside’s skip Callendar drew round the guards with his two stones resting both on the button for a two.
The second end was a similarly tight affair. Cadder were lying one with one stone to play. Donaldson threaded his stone between the two front touching opposition guards but came up inches short, taking only the one. In the third end Cadder kept pouring stones into the house but a howitzer of a 4 stone raise from Callendar gave Kelvinside a one. The game turned in Cadder’s favour when Kelvinside missed a couple of shots for the first time in the match and the Cadder team duly converted a three quickly followed by a steal in the next end. In the 6th end with two stones to play Cadder had 3 stones at the back of the house with Kelvinside lying 2 at the front. Donaldson went for the double narrowly missing the perfect angle leaving Kelvinside lying one with Skip Callendar drawing the button once again for a two. At 5:5 the game entered what was clearly going to be the last end. In a nervy start, Kelvinside drew into the house. Cadder missed the take out and Kelvinside put on the guard. McAuley then removed the house stone leaving his number two stone in play and counting. Kelvinside put on more guards. Jamieson successfully removed one and Daegan two. Kelvinside’s skip Callendar drew behind the remaining guard with his first stone lying shot. Donaldson played a hack weight tick shop that pushed it back and wide. Cadder were lying one with two stones to play. Callender attempted to replace his stone, it was lying shot but a little less guarded. Donaldson played a hack weight tap back carefully swept the length of the ice for a two and Cadder victory. This was a great team performance with very few flaws and lots of subtle angle raises and taps over the course of the evening. The team have qualified to go to Forfar and represent Braehead at the National Super League Finals. Alan Donaldson The annual ‘friendly’ between Cadder and Alma took place last Friday. Cadder B got off to good start – the Alma team only had three players! In terms of curling the good start continued until Alma B found their length and direction and took a 5 in the 5th end. This countered Cadder A’s 5 in the 4th end! Overall result was 18-16 to Cadder to ensure that Alma retained the wooden spoon. We reconvened in the Lenzie Golf Club where drinks and food were to be had. Thank you to everyone who took part, in the spirit that curling always intended. Thank you also to Charles Jackson who arranged the evening, the purvey and for the extra helpings of pies, beans and chips! Thank you to John Ferguson for the photos. A wonderful, social occasion. President v Vice President What a great night out. 4 teams played in the annual President v Vice Presidents match at Braehead. The President's teams won the contest, and we then met up for a great curry night at the Shish Mahal
2 even retired to Stravaigan for a wee whisky of more!! Well organised committee Huge congratulations to Cadder members Ian Gillespie, John Ferguson, and Robert Jamieson, and to John Summers. They were playing in the Scottish Masters playdowns, against Alastair Govans team, and as this photo shows they just kept drawing them into the house!!!
