In the last 5 – 10 years Cadder has worked hard at making the club friendly, competitive and fun.
We curl at Lanarkshire Ice Rink (Hamilton). New curlers are welcomed into the club through joining our Duncan League. In this league, beginners mix with established curlers, with Invershiel skips (our main competition) playing at lead and giving general advice to the team members.
Each season we usually have 4 – 5 new members and often several of them have never curled before. At the beginning of the season we have a ‘reminder session’ when we try and teach new curlers the basics. Through the Duncan league, new members quickly get involved in team competitions, knowing at the same time that others around them are relatively new too.
Once someone has played a couple of seasons, they become a 3 or skip in the Duncan, and can also apply to join the Invershiel League. This league is our main competition, with a league of 6 teams and played as a double round robin. The skips for this competition are chosen by the membership at the AGM. The only people not eligible for election to Invershiel skip are the bottom two skips from the previous seasons Invershiel competition.
Winning Duncan skips are often chosen by the members to become an Invershiel skip, though the transition is pretty competitive!
As a club we also like to be pretty competitive in outside competitions. We regularly have teams compete in the RCCC Seniors and Masters Finals. We have been runners up in the Scottish Double Rink Championship, runners up in the low road RCCC Province Competition, and won the Allan Medal, the Jim Fraser Pairs and the Denis Kyd Quaich in Tenth (Dunbartonshire) Province competition.
We also play ‘friendlies’ with other clubs including, Glasgow XX, Cambusnethan and inverkeithing. Early January each year sees our derby match with our local team Alma.
Even if we do not always win, we try hard and are very keen to increasingly involve new members in outside competitions or matches, whether friendlies or absolutely non friendlies!
