The David Duncan final was contested on Valentine’s day with a few wives pointing out that this had not been the reason for keeping the evening clear in our diaries. The original team put together at the beginning of the season were all available to play, McAuley, Jamieson, Daegan and Donaldson. Having been beaten by Kelvinside earlier in the season the team entered the match as underdogs but were looking forward to the occassion. In the first end both sides played every stone asked of them by their skips. However, Kelvinside’s skip Callendar drew round the guards with his two stones resting both on the button for a two.
The second end was a similarly tight affair. Cadder were lying one with one stone to play. Donaldson threaded his stone between the two front touching opposition guards but came up inches short, taking only the one. In the third end Cadder kept pouring stones into the house but a howitzer of a 4 stone raise from Callendar gave Kelvinside a one. The game turned in Cadder’s favour when Kelvinside missed a couple of shots for the first time in the match and the Cadder team duly converted a three quickly followed by a steal in the next end. In the 6th end with two stones to play Cadder had 3 stones at the back of the house with Kelvinside lying 2 at the front. Donaldson went for the double narrowly missing the perfect angle leaving Kelvinside lying one with Skip Callendar drawing the button once again for a two. At 5:5 the game entered what was clearly going to be the last end. In a nervy start, Kelvinside drew into the house. Cadder missed the take out and Kelvinside put on the guard. McAuley then removed the house stone leaving his number two stone in play and counting. Kelvinside put on more guards. Jamieson successfully removed one and Daegan two. Kelvinside’s skip Callendar drew behind the remaining guard with his first stone lying shot. Donaldson played a hack weight tick shop that pushed it back and wide. Cadder were lying one with two stones to play. Callender attempted to replace his stone, it was lying shot but a little less guarded. Donaldson played a hack weight tap back carefully swept the length of the ice for a two and Cadder victory. This was a great team performance with very few flaws and lots of subtle angle raises and taps over the course of the evening. The team have qualified to go to Forfar and represent Braehead at the National Super League Finals. Alan Donaldson
